Sawan: Political process got rid of the burden of ideologies

The Italian newspaper “La Repubblica” conducted an interview with the head of the “Justice and Construction” party, Muhammad Sawan, and began with the phrase: “You are a well-organized party.”

The newspaper asked, “Sawan,” in an interview with him: For some, perhaps too much, some of your citizens fear the party, and are afraid of the sectarian and secret model?

Sawan said: What happened during the Gaddafi era was the prevention of any political freedom and the banning of any kind of civil society organizations as well as political activities. This prompted many Libyans to oppose the regime inside and outside Libya. We acted in secret, we used labels and slogans that were usable. On the political scene in the 1980s and 1990s.

He added: Now the political process has gone beyond the ideological nomenclatures and previous formalities, whether Islamic, national or Baathist, there is a known form of the political process now that is based on parties, which led to a reduction in ideological orientations.

“We are no longer prisoners of certain ideological molds, there is a wide space for the implementation of our political mission.” He said.

La Repubblica asked: Are you proud of your party’s role as the only political group that has survived these turbulent phases?

Sawan said: In these difficult years that were marked by stages of violent conflict, the party was able to establish itself as the only stable political organization in Libya. Justice and Construction is also able to participate in the Government of National Accord through a member of the Council of Ministers, not to mention the fact that the President of the Supreme Council of State is a member of the Justice and Construction Party.

He added: We have made every effort in every crucial stage, the last of which is the UN-sponsored “dialogue” that could lead to a national unity government. The other, ”to assist in the transition process from a situation of armed conflict to a context of dialogue and negotiation.
