Belgium attempts to seize €49 million of Libya’s frozen assets

The ambassador and representative of Libya to the United Nations, Taher El Sonni, revealed in a tweet Belgium’s attempt to exploit the transitional phase that Libya is going through and to address the sanctions committee to seize 49 million euros of frozen funds.

In the same tweet, El Sonni stated that, in coordination with the Libyan Investment Authority, they have informed the Security Council of Libya’s rejection and warning of this step, stressing that Belgium must retract this step.

Earlier in 2018, Belgium had tried to seize the Libyan funds frozen in its banks, taking advantage of the insecurity crisis.
