The Independent: Secret talks almost saved Gaddafi from killing

The British newspaper, “The Independent”, revealed Friday the content of secret talks that could have resulted in the late Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi escaping from the end he reached.

The British newspaper said: “The talks were the most likely approach to peacefully end the Libyan tensions and unrest in 2011, and the two negotiations from the regime and the opposition had reached a proposal that Gaddafi should leave the reins of power and retire from politics, but state institutions will continue without any changes.”

The Independent added: “These understandings were completely collapsed, “Gaddafi” was killed with the support of NATO, and more than a thousand civilians were killed during the war, while former Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Store, who brokered the agreement, accused France and Britain of obstructing the efforts that were on the verge of a negotiated solution.

The newspaper added: “Gaddafi’s friends abroad tried with all their might to find a negotiating formula, in conjunction with Saif al-Islam’s call for senior Norwegian officials to come to Tripoli and negotiate.”
