European Court orders withdrawal of Aisha Gaddafi’s name from sanctions list

The European Court ordered the withdrawal of the name of Aisha Gaddafi, the daughter of Muammar Gaddafi, from the list of those subject to sanctions in 2011, on the grounds that she no longer poses a threat to international peace and security in the region.

The European Union court affirmed in its ruling that the applicant had not resided in Libya for years and that her file did not show any participation in Libyan political life.

The decision to include or remove a person or company from the European sanctions list is made unanimously by the member states of the European Council.

“The council will carefully analyze the court’s decision to cancel the decisions to keep Ms. Gaddafi on the list of restrictive measures applied to Libya, and it will decide how to proceed,” a European foreign ministry spokesman told AFP.

The spokesman added that “the listing remains in effect at least until the end of the council’s possible two-month appeal period.”
