EU mission resumes work from inside Libya

The European Union Mission in Libya has reopened its doors in Tripoli, after more than five years of closure due to the security situation.

In the mission statement, the European Union’s ambassador in the capital, Jose Sabadell, congratulated Libyans for what he called “tremendous progress”, which would allow the European Union to work directly and effectively with the Libyan authorities.

Sabadell, who has worked since assuming his post in 2019 from Tunisia, like other ambassadors of European countries, expressed his desire to move to Libya permanently with the members of the mission and his aspiration to a future based on a new base.

France had already announced the reopening of its embassy in Libya last March, as a measure to support the new reconciliation process.

The inauguration of the European Union mission comes more than two months after the national unity government assumed its duties, after its election, during the UN-led Libyan Political Dialogue Forum.

Since the new government assumed its duties, the European mission held a series of meetings to discuss the Libyan situation, the last of which was with the Deputy Head of the Presidential Council, Mossa Al-Koni, to discuss the southern region’s issues and border management.

Earlier, a team from the European Union convened, led by Sabadell; and opened consultations on the Libyan economy in Benghazi with a number of House of Representatives’ members.
