Security Council calls for departure of foreign forces, mercenaries from Libya, and paving way for elections

The UN envoy to Libya, Jan Kubis, revealed that progress on the issue of withdrawing mercenaries and opening the coastal road in Libya had stopped, which led to a further division in the country.

During a session on developments in Libya, the ambassador of Libya at the Security Council, Al-Taher El Sonni, called on the African Union and the United Nations to support national reconciliation project in Libya and achieve transitional justice.

The ambassador of India at the Security Council indicated that the Council had not received any notification regarding the frozen Libyan assets.

The Nigerian ambassador at the Security Council called for a review of the conditions for returning migrants to Libya.

The ambassador of Mexico at the Security Council described the humanitarian situation regarding migrants as extremely critical, and demanded that measures be taken to avoid further tragedies, rreferring to the situation in Chad, saying: “What Chad has witnessed recently is evidence of the need to remove mercenaries from Libya. The necessary measures must be taken to collect weapons and place them under state control.”

The ambassador of Tunisia at the Security Council reiterated the commitment of all Libyan parties to hold the elections as scheduled on December 24, adding that the presence of mercenaries in Libya threatens its security and the security of neighboring countries, adding that they must be removed immediately, and called on regional actors to support the ceasefire and the joint military commission.

The ambassador of Niger at the Security Council said mercenaries must leave Libya in order to preserve the security of the region and the neighboring countries

While the ambassado of Ireland at the Security Council welcomed the tangible progress that Libya has recently witnessed in the settlement process.

Meanwhile, the ambassador of Vietnam at the Security Council called on the international community to support building confidence among the Libyan parties and maintaining the ceasefire.

Whereas, the ambassador of the United Kingdom at the Security Council also called on the international community to play its role to hold accountable those obstructing the political process in Libya, while the US ambassador at the Security Council warned that any person who undermines the Libyan elections may face international sanctions.

The ambassador of Russia at the Security Council called for preventing foreign interference in Libyan affairs, and that the political settlement in Libya should not be a place for settling international disputes.

While the ambassador of Kenya at the Security Council stressed the respect of the ceasefire and called for the departure of mercenaries from Libya.

Kenya’s ambassador at the Security Council urged the unity government to continue to consolidate institutions and to continue investing in national reconciliation.

Meanwhile, the ambassador of France at the Security Council explained that the security, stability and safety of the Libyans must be guaranteed through the application of a ceasefire and the withdrawal of mercenaries, reminding of the need to build confidence among the parties, implement a ceasefire and open the coastal road, and that the crisis in Libya will not be resolved without disarming armed groups.
