UN, Turkey see eye to eye on importance of Libyan elections

The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General to Libya, and the Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, Jan Kubis, agreed with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on “the critical importance of holding national parliamentary and presidential elections in Libya in December 2021.”

The mission said in a statement that Cavusoglu assured Kubis, during their meeting on Saturday, in Antalya, of Turkey’s steadfast support for the Libyan dialogue process led by the Libyans and facilitated by the United Nations.

The two parties stressed “the importance of supporting the temporary executive authority and other institutions to achieve this goal, in order to end the transitional phase and to strengthen efforts to unify the country and its institutions.”

They highlighted the importance of implementing the ceasefire agreement in a balanced and sequential manner that would lead to increased confidence among the various parties.

In Ankara, the Special Envoy, Jan Kubis, exchanged views on the situation in Libya with high-level security representatives, and on his part, he briefed them on the activities and efforts of the United Nations in Libya.
