UNSMIL intensifies efforts to rally support for Libya’s elections

The UN envoy to Libya, Jan Kubis, is holding continuous meetings with officials to mobilize support for the Libyan elections scheduled for December 24.

In his last moves, Kubis met the Head of the High National Elections Commission, Emad Al-Sayah, in Tripoli, in the presence of the commissioner, Abdel Hakim Al-Sha’ab.

The meeting reviewed the ongoing preparations of the commission for the elections scheduled for December 24, and the latest developments in the political process. Kubis expressed the readiness of the UN mission to overcome all difficulties that may face the electoral process.

Kubis also met, on Saturday in Tobruk, with the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, who, in turn, stressed the need for the next president to be elected directly by the people, and announced his adherence to the date of the presidential and parliamentary elections, and the support of the High Electoral Commission to meet the electoral merit.

Saleh stressed the seriousness of the House of Representatives in its support for organizing the presidential and parliamentary elections, on time on December 24 of this year. The two sides also discussed the latest developments in the political process in Libya.

Meanwhile, the UN envoy to Libya, Jan Kubis, discussed with the Russian President’s Adviser to the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, the developments in the situation in Libya. The political dialogue and the Berlin international decisions, while the ministry confirmed the existence of an upcoming visit of the UN envoy to Moscow on June 1 to meet with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
