Human Rights Commission blames Unity Government for “illegal practices in prisons”

The National Commission for Human Rights in Libya held the Government of National Unity responsible for all abusive practices inside prisons and centers for illegal immigrants, which are run by the Ministries of Interior and Justice.

The commission said in a statement: “It is the responsibility of the government to implement the relevant local and international rules in the treatment of detainees, and to abide by the ratified international conventions, foremost of which is the International Convention against Torture and Other Cruel Treatment and Punishment.”

It called on the government to open an urgent investigation into the conditions of detention of prisoners and detainees in rehabilitation institutions affiliated with the Ministry of Justice, and the conditions in which migrants are held in shelters, to stop all arbitrary and illegal practices against them, and to hold those involved accountable.

At the conclusion of its statement, the commission called on the United Nations Support Mission in Libya and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to conduct field visits to prisons and shelters to see the conditions of detention, and to submit documented reports to the relevant United Nations agencies to take all possible measures to limit the violation of the rights of prisoners, detainees and migrants in Libya .
