UK: Libya is at a dangerous juncture, but Libyans’ stance on elections is clear

The United Kingdom vowed, on Friday, to take action against those obstructing the political and the electoral processes in Libya.

This came in the statement of Britain’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Barbara Woodward, during a briefing session for the UN envoy to Libya, Jan Kubis, to the UN Security Council.

Woodward said: “Time is running out to agree on the legal basis for holding elections. We are at a dangerous juncture, and there is a clear demand from the Libyan people to participate in elections.”

She added: “It has become necessary and pivotal to the agreement of the circles of power in Libya, in order to hold the elections, calling for commitment to stating the results of the poll.”

Woodward welcomed the efforts of the House of Representatives to reach a solution to the issue of the election law, and to work to hold presidential and parliamentary elections on December 24.

The British diplomat added that the required steps have not changed since the agreement on the road map, and that the task has become more urgent.

In her speech to the Security Council, Woodward indicated the UK’s commitment to supporting women in order to participate in the upcoming elections, with full, equal and real participation, to allow them the opportunity on December 24, as a voter, candidate and decision-maker in the upcoming political process.
