Refugees demonstrate in Canada in solidarity with their fellow nationals detained in Libya

Canadian CBC news website published a report that sheds light on the conditions of migrants detained in Libya and the inhumane conditions in Libyan detention centers.

International reports state that refugees are overcrowded in detention centers, and tell stories of detainees who have been subjected to torture, sexual violence and extortion at the hands of guards in Libya.

Libya is a major hub for migrants fleeing poverty and wars in Africa and the Middle East, however; it is one of the most dangerous routes that refugees can take when trying to escape to Europe.

Yunus Gebrselassie, an Eritrean refugee residing in St. John, Canada, organized a protest outside the Confederation Building, on Saturday morning, in solidarity with detainees in Libyan prisons and pressure on the Canadian government to intervene and do something to help them.

Yunus was one of those arrested by the Libyan coast guard, and ended up being arrested in one of the Libyan detention centers in the past.

The protesters hope that the Canadian government will help other Eritreans get the same opportunity to reach Canada.

Reports indicate that there are between 250 and 300 Eritreans living in Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada, most of whom have experienced Libyan detention centers, and many of them are specially cared for upon their arrival in Canada.
