Secret meeting for leaders of armed formations in Tripoli is behind military reinforcements

A source revealed to 218News that an unannounced meeting was held Monday and included a number of leaders of armed formations in Tripoli; to solve the problem surrounding the dismissal of Major General Abdel Basset Marwan from his position as commander of the Tripoli Military District.

The source confirmed that the meeting was chaired by the commander of the Al-Nawasi Brigade, Al-Shat Road, Mustafa Wali, and managed as a “mediator” to solve the problem among a number of armed battalion leaders and the commander of the 444 Brigade, Lieutenant Colonel Mahmoud Hamza.

The meeting was attended by the commander of the Stabilization Support Apparatus, Abdul Ghani Al-Kikli, the former commander of the Tripoli Revolutionaries’ Brigade, Haitham Al-Tajouri, the leader in Operation Volcano of Rage, Ayoub Abu Ras, the commander of the 42 Brigade Abdul Hakim Al-Sheikh, and a number of leaders of other armed formations.

The source added that the commander of the 444 Brigade did not attend the meeting because of his refusal to return Major General Abdel Basset Marwan to his previous position as commander of the Tripoli Military District, explaining that the meeting did not come out with any result because of opposing opinions about the return of Major General Abdel Baset Marwan. The commander of the Al-Nawasi Brigade tried to bring the two sides closer together and continuously talked with Mahmoud Hamza for that matter.

Following the failure of the meeting, the armed battalions of the Stabilization Support Apparatus, the Tripoli Revolutionaries Brigade, the 42 Brigade, as well as some other battalions loyal to Abdelbaset Marwan’s return to his position, surrounded the capital in several areas, including Ain Zara, the airport road, and the center of the country, while the forces of the 444 Brigade are still in their camp and headquarters.

Since the early morning hours of Tuesday, the city of Tripoli has witnessed military movements in several areas of the city, and an exclusive source from the Tripoli Protection Force told “218News” that the roads of Ain Zara, Al-Khela and Bab Bani Ghashir were closed with sand berms, in conjunction with the spread of military vehicles in the region, while there were reports that some schools were closed, and teachers asked students to return to their homes.

The source stated that armed battalions affiliated with the Ministry of Defense had begun to encircle the capital to disallow battalions from other cities that intended to ignite a war in the center of Tripoli from moving.

These moves come three days before the election date, which has become a fait accompli in light of officials’ rejection to announce the postponement, continuing to pursue a policy of silence.
