Guterres calls for holding Libya elections as soon as possible

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres urged all Libyan stakeholders to hold free, fair, inclusive and credible presidential and parliamentary elections “as soon as possible.”

Guterres called, in the report he submitted to the Security Council on Monday, and obtained by Agence France-Presse; for respecting the wish of 2.8 million Libyans who have registered to vote.

He stressed the need for the competent Libyan authorities and institutions to work together to solve the basic problems that led to the postponement of the elections, and to create the necessary political and security conditions for holding the presidential and parliamentary elections without further delay.

Guterres added: “I invite them to work together, in accordance with applicable laws and the rules and procedures of their institutions; In order to hold elections in a safe and peaceful environment, with full, equal and meaningful participation of women and youth.”
