migrants’ crossing attempts from Libya to Europe tripled in 2021

UN sources said that the number of migrants and refugees who tried to cross the Mediterranean from Libya towards Europe has increased significantly over the past year.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres noted, in an internal report sent to the UN Security Council; that as of December 14, the Libyan Coast Guard intercepted 30,990 migrants and refugees and returned them to Libya, nearly three times the total number of people returned in 2020 (12,000 people), according to the Egyptian newspaper Al-Shorook.

More than 1,300 people have been reported killed or missing by the International Organization for Migration, which is a significant increase from 2020.
