Seven immigrants die while trying to cross Mediterranean from Libya to Italy

The humanitarian organization “Mediterranean Hope” reported that 7 migrants had died in the Mediterranean after trying to cross to Europe on board a boat containing 280 migrants.

The organization added that the migrants were from Bangladesh, Egypt, Mali and Sudan, and were found off the Italian island of Lampedusa.

The mayor of the island of Lampedusa, Toto Martello, told AFP that three people died during the crossing, while four others who were suffering from severe hypothermia died while being transported to the island after they were intercepted by the coast guard.

The number of migrants arriving in Italy has doubled from 34,000 in 2020, to 64,500 in 2021.
