Italian official: Ukraine’s crisis has diverted international attention from Libya

The former Permanent Representative of the Council of Europe and Central Director at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Marco Marcelli, said that the Ukrainian crisis has diverted the international community’s attention from Libya, which he considered is still in a state of political and institutional instability.

Marcelli added that interest in Libya also declined in the wake of the postponement of the presidential elections that were scheduled to take place on December 24 last year.

He expected that Libyans will resort to the polls  at the end of next June, pointing out that it is clear that opponents of this momentum will not participate, as the House of Representatives committed to drafting a new constitution to be submitted to a popular referendum by the summer, and if approved; presidential elections can be organized.
