International Political Working Group : Elections are the only solution in Libya

The co-chairs of the Political Working Group of the International Follow-up Committee on Libya, consisting of Algeria, Germany, the League of Arab States and the United Nations, stressed the importance of maintaining calm and stability on the ground and the need to rebuild consensus between the Libyan political parties.

During their virtual meeting – Tuesday – the co-chairs expressed their full support for the efforts of the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General of the United Nations on Libya, Stephanie Williams, to break the current impasse through dialogue and her initiative to convene a joint committee meeting of the House of Representatives and the High Council of State to agree on a constitutional and legal framework for the elections.

They reiterated that elections are the only solution to the recurring political crises in Libya, stressing the importance of making continuous progress on the economic and security tracks of the intra-Libyan dialogue.

It is noteworthy that this full international meeting is to assess the current Libyan developments and review the best support mechanisms for the political process as well as to keep it on the right track – according to what the United Nations Support Mission in Libya reported on its website.
