US ambassador denies existence of Western plan to postpone Libya elections

The US ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland, refuted what he described as “false allegations and false stories” published by Arab websites and newspapers, based on unnamed sources, alleging the existence of a Western plan to postpone the elections.

Norland added, through a tweet by the US embassy on Monday, that the US continues to support efforts to hold “free and fair elections in Libya as soon as possible.”

It should be noted that a website and an Arab newspaper on its website revealed what it said were the details of a Western proposal to organize general elections in Libya in mid-2023.

On Saturday, the newspapers concerned relied on the fact that they obtained their information from Libyan sources and described them as identical, without naming them, which the US, through its ambassador Norland, denied altogether.

The newspapers indicated that the proposal is circulating in some Libyan circles and leads to general elections in the middle of next year, amid objections from some Libyan parties, specifically the House of Representatives and the High Council of State.
