Germany halts training of Libyan coastguards over violations against immigrants

The German Foreign Ministry spokeswoman accused Libyan officials of displaying “unacceptable and repeated” behavior against refugees and non-governmental organizations.

The spokeswoman said on Wednesday that the German government cannot currently justify the training by the German army of the Libyan Coast Guard.

The spokeswoman explained that the Libyan Coast Guard had “acted in a completely unacceptable and illegal manner”, based on two incidents that occurred in July of last year.

This German announcement refusing to train the Libyan Coast Guard coincides at the same time with the German government’s agreement to extend participation in IRINI, the European Union’s maritime mission, which monitors UN arms embargo imposed on Libya.

Meanwhile, a recent report by the head of Operation IRINI acknowledged the excessive use of force by the Libyan authorities, but he called for the continuation of European training programs.
