Libyan bank plans to establish new airport in Benghazi

Libya’s Bank of Commerce and Development (BCD) is planning to establish a new airport in Benghazi to compete with the existing Benina International Airport, chairperson of the BCD Gamal Abdel Malik said Thursday.

In an exclusive statement to 218News, he added that the planned airport comes in line with the bank’s continuous contribution to the development of the country’s infrastructure.

The bank has injected 200 million dinars into the Barneq Company for air transport, he continued.

It comes on the sidelines of the general assembly of Maghreb banks.

On the other hand, Abdel Malik noted that the current economic reform program is “ineffective” and has not achieved its objectives yet.

He described imposing fees of 183% on foreign exchange as “exaggerated and inaccurate” decision.

Libya’s foreign exchange reserves have reached $80 billion, which is sufficient to achieve strong reforms, Abdel Malik said.

Benina International Airport is located about 19 km east of Benghazi.

The airport is operated by the Civil Aviation and Meteorology Bureau of Libya and is the second largest in the country after Tripoli International Airport. Benina International is also the secondary hub of both Buraq Air and flag carrier, Libyan Airlines.
