Sanctions must be imposed on violators to agreements signed in Palremo: HCS member

Two days before holding the Palremo Conference in Italy, member of the High Council of State (HCS) Adel Karamous called on Friday for sanctions on any party that will break the agreements that might be signed at the conference.

Karamous told Sputnik that sanctions are the “only solution” to ensure all political parties’ commitment to an agreement or a charter set to be concluded at the Palremo meetings.

He added that the Palremo conference will succeed if the international community seriously considered the Libyan file.

The HCS, which advises the Government of National Accord, stands by the terms laid out during the Paris Conference to base any new arrangement on the Skhirat Agreement, subject military institutions to a civil authority and hold a referendum on the constitution before the presidential elections, Karamous emphasized.

The upcoming Palermo Conference on Libya —which will be held Nov. 12-13— will bring together the main Libyan parties, with the purpose of defining platforms for negotiation between the different components of Libya’s fragmented political arena.

Meanwhile, member of the HCS Ahmed Lanqi called for a meeting between Libya’s rival parties on the sidelines of Palermo Conference for its outcome to be successful, unlike previous conferences.

During these meetings, the parties should come up with a plan to unify the executive authority and state institutions, particularly military institutions and consider immigrants’ return home, he told 218 TV.

He added that the parties involved should also agree on a deadline for elections, and all the parties should vow to accept its results.
