13,000 doses of scorpion anti-venom serum reach southern Libya

The health ministry-affiliated Medical Supply Organization’s (MSO) branch in Fezzan, southwestern Libya has received 13,000 doses of scorpion anti-venom serum on Thursday, in preparation for distributing them to hospitals and medical centers in the south region.

The ministry’s crisis and emergency management committee obtained the vaccine shipment on Monday after a local company, mandated by the ministry of health, provided it.

The head of the committee described the vaccine delivery as “strategic stock,” for next summer, asserting that the committee will supervise the distribution process to ensure fairness.

The World Health Organization (WHO) distributed a previous shipment of medicines in July to a number of hospitals and health centers in the southern region.

Sayed Hussain Jaffar, WHO Representative and Head of mission in Libya, said “In 2017 hundreds of people were stung by scorpions, and unfortunately many of the victims died, many parents lost their children in the absence of the antidote.”
