Alleged Maltese envoy violates sovereignty of Libya: foreign ministry

The Foreign Ministry of the Government of National Accord on Friday denied its knowledge about the Maltese Neville Gava who visited Libya last week and met with officials pretending to be an adviser to the Maltese prime minister.

The ministry stressed such visits of foreign envoys without coordination with the competent authorities is a flagrant violation of the sovereignty of Libya.

Last Tuesday, Gava met with the Libyan Deputy Prime Minister Ahmed M’etig in the Libyan capital Tripoli and discussed boosting cooperation between the two countries.

Gava said that he was not on official duty during his visit to Libya, and it was a friendly trip, according Times of Malta.

A spokesperson for the Maltese Prime Minister denied sending Gava as a personal envoy to Libya.

Gava held several meetings with officials from the Government of National Accord, the ministries of health and interior, and the media office of the Libyan Prime Minister.

A telegram was issued by the Libyan ministry of foreign affairs on 7 November entitled “Urgent” requesting the Libyan consulate in Malta to grant a visa to Gava and another Maltese citizen. The telegram said that the two Maltese were on a one-month official mission at the Maltese embassy in Tripoli, which raises more questions about the incident.

The ministry said on Facebook that Gava requested a visa to visit the HQ of the Maltese embassy in Tripoli, stressing that he was granted the visa on this basis.
