Two women held in Mitiga International Airport for smuggling €100,350

The department for smuggling and drugs control at Mitiga International Airport in Tripoli arrested two women for attempting to smuggle €100,350 through the airport.

On the airport’s Facebook page, the department explained that the two women were heading to Istanbul last Tuesday, and they have taken legal procedures in preparation for referring them to the competent authorities.

The department’s employees are doing their best to ensure security and combat smuggling in the airport despite the harsh working conditions, the department said.

In September, Libya’s UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) has imposed a 183% fee on commercial and private foreign currency transactions to narrow the gap between the official and black market rates, bringing the effective official rate for such transactions to LYD 3.9 per one dollar.

Libya has remained dogged by turmoil since 2011, after an uprising led to the ouster and death of long-serving ruler Muammar Gaddafi after more than four decades in power.

Since then, Libya’s stark political divisions have yielded two rival seats of power – one in Tobruk and another in Tripoli – and a host of heavily armed militia groups.
