Libya’s neighboring countries renew commitment to support peaceful political transition

The meeting of foreign ministers of Libya’s neighboring countries, which was concluded in Khartoum on Thursday, affirmed their commitment to support peaceful political transition in the North African country based on a consensual application of the political agreement.

The meeting was chaired by Sudanese Foreign Minister Al-Dardiri Mohamed Ahmed and attended by Special Representative for Libya of the U.N. Secretary-General Ghassan Salame, along with the foreign ministers of Libya, Egypt, Chad, Algeria, and Tunisia, in addition to senior delegates from the Arab League, the African Union, France and Italy.

The conference has stressed the respect of the Skhirat political agreement signed on 17 December 2015 as a framework to resolve the crisis and to push towards its application by the Libyans on the basis of adherence to the political option.

The participants also rejected foreign intervention in Libya’s internal affairs, as well as pushing comprehensive dialogue, giving priority to national reconciliation and excluding any military solutions.

The meeting reiterated its support for the Presidency Council of the Government of National Accord (GNA), welcoming all the initiatives taken to gather Libyan leaders, including efforts to unify the military institution.

The final communique of the conference has underscored the importance of a united initiative, which is sponsored by the United Nations that reflects the desires and priorities of the Libyans. The conference decided that the next conference on Libya neighboring countries shall be held within a period of six months in any of Libya neighboring countries.

The conference has fully supported the U.N. Special Representative’s plan on Libya, including his recent briefing to the U.N. Security Council.
