EU considers sanctions on those who undermine Libya’s political process

The European Union (EU) will consider additional sanctions on those who undermine Libya’s political process, according to a Monday statement.

“All those who undermine the political process or threaten the stability of Libya will be held accountable. Subject to further developments, the EU stands ready to consider the application of additional sanctions,” the EU statement said.

It further remarked that the EU Council is committed to helping Libyans to hold elections through supporting the High National Electoral Commission, and it welcomes the ongoing efforts to hold municipal elections.

“The status quo in Libya is a prevalent source of instability and insecurity for the Libyan people, its neighbors, and the entire region. The EU reiterates that there can only be a political solution to the Libyan crisis which needs to come from the Libyans themselves through an inclusive political process,” the statement added.

To achieve stability in Libya, the European Union Ambassador to Tripoli Alan Bugeja declared in November that the European Union’s mission will set projects to improve the performance of the government of the National Accord (GNA)’s Ministry of Interior.

During his meeting with Minister of Interior Fathi Pasha, Bugeja welcomed cooperation with Libya to tackle security issues, particularly illegal immigration.

The discussion highlighted the security situation on Libya’s southern borders and ways to secure them to ultimately reduce immigrant departure into Europe.
