Salame, Sarraj discuss preparations for upcoming national conference

Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Ghassan Salamé, and his deputy, Stephanie Williams, held a meeting with Head of Presidency Council, Faiez Sarraj, on Sunday in Tripoli.

During the meeting, several points were discussed, including arrangements for the expected national conference and the latest developments in the Libyan political arena.

Last week, Italian Prime Minister and the U.N. envoy said all Libyan parties agreed to hold a U.N. conference by early 2019 to prepare for presidential and parliamentary elections. The Italian initiative was the latest international effort to stabilize the North African state which has struggled with fighting among rival factions since 2011.

Now the U.N. is targeting a national conference that would provide “a platform” for Libyans to spell out their vision for the future.

A meeting on the Libyan settlement was held in Palermo, southern Italy, on 12-13 November. The leaders of the warring factions, EU and UN representatives, as well as the parties concerned, took part in the summit. After two days of intense talks, the participants agreed to arrange a new conference in Libya.
