Libya wins 6 medals in 5th int’l solidarity weightlifting championship

Libyan weightlifters continued their outstanding achievements as they grabbed overall six medals at the 5th Solidarity International Weightlifting Championship and Arab Weightlifting Championship concluded on Thursday in Cairo.

Weightlifter Ahmed Abu Zriba won three silver medals in the junior competitions, while Mearaj al-tapal won three bronze in senior category.

Both championships also witnessed the participation of Libyan referees Osama Qanaw and Nury Hailan.

Twenty countries represented by 114 athletes have participated in the championships that lasted from 8 to 13 December.

The Solidarity International Championship winners will qualify to Summer Olympics 2020 in Tokyo.

It was co-organized by the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) and the Egyptian Weightlifting Federation, under the patronage of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, represented by the Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation.

The participating countries are as follows: Algeria, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Cameroon, Egypt, Jordan, Kosovo, Lebanon, Libya, Madagascar, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Turkmenistan, the UAE, and Uzbekistan.

Previous editions of the Solidarity Championship were held in Saudi Arabia (2012), Uganda (2014), Turkey (2015), and Jordan (2016).
