Expert links attack on Foreign Ministry to extradition of Manchester bomber’s brother

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs was attacked after it agreed to extradite the brother of Manchester arena bomber Salman Abedi to the U.K. by the end of the year, Director of the Libyan Center for Security Studies Adel al-Talhi told 218tv.

Talhi blamed the attack on weak security measures at the ministry, although similar attacks previously occurred at the Libyan election commission and the National of Oil Corporation (NOC).

He added that the main reason behind the inability of Libya to uproot terrorism is the “lack of trust,,” as several security experts have submitted strategies to combat terrorism to Libyan governmental entities ; however, decision makers have not considered them.

Three people were killed and more than 18 were injured a after suicide attack was carried out Tuesday morning at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters in Tripoli.

The Islamic State (IS) claimed early on Wednesday responsibility for the deadly gun and bomb attack.

In November, the British authorities agreed with Head of Presidency Council Faiez Sarraj to extradite the brother of of Manchester arena bomber Salman Abedi, who killed 22 people in 2017. Hashem Abedi was arrested in Libya prior to the 2017 attack.

“According to the general prosecutor we can extradite [him]. After we complete the legal process in Libya, it is only a matter of time,” Sarraj said.
