Kidnapped judge freed in southwestern Libya

Head of the Sabha primary court, Abu Bakr Bashir, was freed on Thursday after he was abducted and tortured for about 24 hours, according to sources from the court.

Judges and employees of the Sabha court were repeatedly exposed to death threats that forced them to hide or move in tinted-glass vehicles.

The court’s employees believe that Bashir was kidnapped by someone who was involved in a personal status case tried by Bashir. This person has previously intimidated the judge, according to the sources.

The Ministry of Justice in the Government of National Accord has condemned the abduction of Bashir, demanding that all security authorities act swiftly to protect the judiciary, arrest the criminals and bring them before the Public Prosecutor, and open an urgent investigation to punish the perpetrators.

Earlier, the primary court of the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi was attacked by unidentified gunmen trying to free prisoners.
