Video of migrant tortured in Libya sounds alarm about human trafficking

A video went viral on social media on Sunday showing the torture of an African young man who seems to be an illegal migrant, bringing to mind the issue of human trafficking in Libya.

The footage featured the victim lying on the ground with his hands and feet tied while he was beaten brutally. It seemed that the victim was accompanied by three others.

Human traffickers usually target refugees and migrants in Libya taking advantage of the security chaos in the country.

In November, the United Nations Security Council, led by the Netherlands, recently adopted a resolution to sanction perpetrators of human trafficking and sexual abuse in Libya, CNN reported.

The sanctions require countries to freeze the assets of individuals committing these crimes and prevent them from travelling. This is a timely strengthening of the sanctions campaign against Libya as reports of human trafficking are rising, particularly in camps where many refugees have “disappeared.”
