Voluntary campaign cleans Ghadames East Airport in preparation for reopening

A voluntary campaign was launched on Sunday to clean the airfield of the Ghadames East Airport, located east of Ghadames border city, in preparation for the resumption of flights within the coming days.

Charitable and youth organizations and the airport employees took part in the campaign in northwestern Libya. The main airfield was abandoned in the past years, allowing desert grasses to grow and obstruct aircraft landing.

Since 2014, the airport has been closed, except for emergency flights or official visits.

The people of Ghadames have long been waiting for the the reopening of the airport to ease the burden of travelling, especially that main roads linking the city to the coastal towns in the north are in poor condition, besides the lack of security and shortage of gasoline in Ghadames.
