GNA warns against subjugating Tripoli Airport to private interests amid chaos

The Interior Ministry of the Government of the National Accord (GNA) warned against any attempt to impose a fait accompli on the Tripoli Airport and “subjugate it to a certain party’s interests.”

Some elements are trying to control Tripoli International Airport amid the chaos that has erupted in Tripoli since Wednesday due to clashes between militias and the 7th Brigade, affiliated with the GNA’s Defense Ministry, the Interior Ministry said in a Thursday statement.

The ministry called upon those involved in the clashes to halt the military escalation that has led to Tripoli’s deteriorating security situation.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior expressed its surprise toward the clashes, as they coincide with handing over the task of securing the airport to the Security Department of Tripoli International Airport instead of the Joint Security Chamber of Tarhuna, a Libyan town 65 kilometer to the southeast of Tripoli.

The clashes violate a UN-brokered ceasefire agreement signed on 4 September by representatives of the GNA, military commanders, security apparatuses and armed groups present in and around the capital.

The United Nation Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) warned on Thursday the armed parties of the consequences of violating the agreement.
