Protesters force shutdown of BPMC’s petroleum depot in Misrata

Several members of the former presidential guard agency have blocked the entrance of the Brega Petroleum Marketing Company’s (BPMC) depot in Misrate on Tuesday, forcing a shutdown to facility in protest of the delay of their salaries for almost a year.

The BPMC’s depot in Misrate covers the needs of the city and its surrounding areas of fuel and gas.

The Presidency Council of the Government of National Accord has issued a decision earlier to dissolve the presidential security apparatus before finalizing the legal and financial procedures.

There were conflicting reports of negotiations with the protesters for the reopening of the depot, but the BPMC has not yet announced the time for resuming work.

Libya remains divided since 2014. The eastern part of the country is governed by the parliament, backed by the Libyan National Army (LNA) and located in Tobruk. While the U.N.-backed Government of National Accord (GNA), headed by Prime Minister Faiez al-Sarraj, operates in the country’s west and is headquartered in Tripoli.
