Libya organizes first women’s volleyball tournament in Benghazi

Benghazi will launch the first women’s volleyball tournament 9-16 February at Suleiman Al-Durrat Sports Complex in the city.

The tournament’s first edition will hold the name of Salwa Bugaighis, a Libyan lawyer and democracy activist whi was killed by unknown gunmen in Benghazi on 25 June 2014.

The competition will include 10 teams from civil society organizations divided into two groups.

The fifty-year old activist was fighting for a democratic society, along with her husband, Issam, and her sister Iman. She was at the forefront of the uprising against Muammar Qaddafi. Later, she sat on the hastily declared transitional council that sought to bring order to the country after Qaddafi’s fall.
