Ghat celebrates National Day of Traditional Dress

The Culture and Civil Society Office in Ghat district celebrated the National Day of Traditional Dress with several events on Wednesday.

Photos published by the cultural office, which is affiliated with the Government of National Accord (GNA), showed a number of people including children wearing the traditional colorful costumes of the Libyan city located in the Fezzan region of southwestern Libya.

“The significance of celebrating Ghat’s National Day of Traditional Dress is introducing the city’s heritage to the newer generations, especially children,” head of the Culture and Civil Society Office Fathy Moteab said.

He added that these kinds of celebrations and events constitute g a “bridge of communication between children and their cultural heritage,” adding “it shapes their awareness and reminds them of their identity.”

Ghat city and the whole of Fezzan region’s history has a great significance. It used to be home to the Garamantian Empire, a city state which operated the Trans-Saharan trade routes between the Carthaginians, and later the Roman Empire.
