Quadripartite meeting on Libya to be held in Tunisia

A quadripartite meeting will be held in Tunisia on the situation in Libya in the upcoming period, Tunisian Foreign Minister Khamis Al-Jahnawi announced Saturday.

Jahnawi said the meeting will be attended by Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres as well as representatives from the African Union, the European Union, and the Arab League.

The Tunisian foreign minister added that the meeting will discuss recent developments of the political situation in Libya and means to reach a solution to the Libyan crisis.

In August 2018, Jahnawi told Washington-based magazine Foreign Policy that Tunisia’s security depends on stability in Libya.

Tunisia has struggled due to the threats posed by “porous borders” with Libya and Algeria, which serve as transit areas for Al-Qaeda’s branch in North Africa and the remains of Islamic State militants in Libya, according to the New York Times.

The problem became apparent in 2012 after the US Embassy in Tunis was attacked.

Three days earlier that year in neighboring Libya, militants had attacked the US mission in the eastern city of Benghazi, killing Four Americans, including Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens.
