LNA spox claims int’l community will support ‘liberation of Tripoli’

The Libyan National Army (LNA) will abide by international laws during “liberating” Tripoli and disbanding illegal armed and terrorist groups, as happened in Benghazi, Derna, and the southern region, the LNA spokesperson Ahmed al-Mismari said Friday.

The LNA will also participate in the National Forum scheduled for mid-April in Ghadames, and “will secure it, as the war on terror is separate from political talks,” and the international community will “support the liberating of Tripoli” because it is fed up with the chaos of the armed groups controlling Tripoli, Mismari added.

The United Nations is holding a conference this month in the southwestern city of Ghadames to discuss a political solution to prepare the country for general elections.

On the progress of the LNA forces towards the capital, the LNA spokesperson said the armed forces clashed with an armed group that tried to enter Gharyan and pushed it back.

He also revealed the arrival of several LNA troops to the city of Tarhuna, about 65 kilometers to the southeast of Tripoli.

Libya has remained beset by turmoil since 2011, when a NATO-backed uprising led to the ouster and death of long-time ruler Muammar Qaddafi after four decades in power.

Since then, the country’s stark political divisions have yielded two rival seats of power: one in the eastern city of Tobruk, to which the LNA is linked, and another in Tripoli.
