LNA, GNA exchange accusations over civilian casualties

Spokesperson for the Libyan National Army (LNA) Ahmed al-Mismari claimed Tuesday that the Government of National Accord (GNA) used bombs in residential areas.

During a press conference, Mismari said the GNA actions threaten civilians’ lives.

He also asserted that the LNA military operation is ongoing and is being “successful as it goes further into Tripoli.”

Mismari warned that a 9K32 Strela-2 air missile system in now seized by militia, explaining that this might be a threat to the world’s civil aviation.

Similarly, on April 23, the GNA accused the LNA of opening fire on a migrant shelter in Qasr Beni Ghashir and injuring people inside.

GNA spokesperson Muhannad Younis said Qasr bin Ghashir became a “dangerous zone” due to the LNA military operations and clashes, which hinder the Red Crescent delivery of humanitarian aid to the area in Tripoli.

The incident is a “crime against humanity” as it violates international law, he said, adding that the GNA will submit evidence and documents on the LNA’s “crimes” to international courts.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) strongly condemned the armed attack on the migrant shelter, saying that detained migrants in Tripoli are at risk due to the ongoing clashes.

Migrant suffering in Libya does not stop at Intentional or accidental attacks, but are allegedly recruited as fighters in the conflict.

Last week, the telegraph reported that hundreds of illegal migrants have been forced to fight with different factions in the ongoing fighting in the Libyan capital.

Speaking to several sources in five Tripoli detention centers, it was revealed that hundreds of migrants and refugees are locked up with only one meal a day in several detention centers in Libya.

“They took us from jail, then they ordered us (to wear) uniforms,” one of the migrants told the Telegraph.

He was just one of scores of refugees and migrants taken from detention centers and forced to assist militants aligned with the U.N.-backed Tripoli government, according to the report.

Clashes between the GNA and the LNA forces are still ongoing in several areas near the Capital. Hundreds have been killed since the beginning of the campaign April 4, with no apparent winner as both the GNA and the LNA seek political support from different countries and entities.
