Haftar, Sisi meet in Cairo, discuss latest developments in Libya

Cairo supports all efforts to counter terrorism and extremist groups, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi told Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Khalifa Haftar in Cairo Thursday.

According to a statement issued by the Egyptian Presidency, the meeting, which took place at el-Ittihadiya Palace, tackled the latest developments in Libya.

Sisi underscored Egypt’s position in support of efforts to counter terrorism as well as extremist groups and militias to reinforce security and stability in Libya.

He also reiterated Egypt’s support for the role of the Libyan military establishment to “restore the pillars of legitimacy” and create an environment conducive to reaching political solutions and to implementing the constitutional milestones in order to fulfil the aspirations of the Libyan people for a decent life and a better future.

Sisi emphasized the role of the military establishment in eradicating all forms of terrorism as well as extremist militias and groups.

Haftar lauded Egypt’s role in supporting the Libyan people o all levels, highlighting the firm historic relations that bind the two countries and their peoples.

He commended Egypt’s efforts to combat terrorism, support peaceful solutions to Arab crises, entrench the institutions of the state and reinforce stability and security for the Arab people at large.

Haftar also reviewed Libya’s efforts to counter foreign interference in Libya’s internal affairs, which “aim to smuggle arms, fighters and foreign terrorists into Libya.”
