Libyan officer who arrested Hisham Ashmay killed

Libyan officer Abdul Hamid Faraj al-Zaraani, who arrested Egyptian terrorist Hisham Ashmawy, was killed during clashes with armed groups in Qasr Bani Qashir, a source told Russian Today (RT) on Monday.

Zaraani participated in the military operation to liberate Derna from terrorism in 2018 during which the Libyan National Army (LNA) arrested the most wanted terrorist in Egypt in October 2018.

The clashes come amid a war between the LNA and the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord that erupted April 4, in which the army fights with powerful militias recruited by the internationally recognized government.

Ashmawy was extradited to the Egyptian authorities Tuesday in the presence of the Egyptian intelligence chief after carrying out investigations with the high-profile defendant to meet all legal requirement.

The investigations revealed that the terrorist had been in constant contact with the leader of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group, Abdul Hakim Belha, who is linked to al-Qaeda and met with him several times.

He also had strong ties with prominent terrorist leaders in Syria and Iraq, who assigned him to train terrorists to launch attacks in Libya and Egypt.
Graduated from military academy in 2000, Ashmawy joined the North Sinai-based Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis terrorist group after his dismissal from the army in 2011.

After breaking away from Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis he joined the Islamic State (IS), then, formed in July 2015 the Mourabitoun organisation in Libya, which is loyal al-Qaeda.
