Salame, Saleh highlight challenges facing Libya

Special Envoy of the U.N. Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Ghassan Salame discussed with speaker of the Tobruk-based House of the Representatives (HoR) Aguila Saleh the challenges facing Libya and the means to return to stability and the rule of law.

After visiting Benghazi, 470 Kilometers from Tobruk, on Sunday, Salame paid a visit to Tobruk where he highlighted the attempts to hold dialogues among Libyan rival factions.

Following his meeting with Khalifa Haftar on Saturday, Salame’s visit to Benghazi aimed to launch projects supported by the U.N. Capital Development Fund.

Since the outbreak of western region’s war, the HoR has expressed support for Libyan National Army (LNA).

Saleh told Independent Arabia in early June that the GNA is “illegitimate” and the 2015 Libyan Political agreement does not have a legal value.

Saleh said the political dialogue failed because it was signed without the consent of all Libyan parties.

He added that if the LNA enters Tripoli, Libya will restore its “overthrown legitimacy.”
