Kabeer meets UN deputy envoy over CBL’s int’l audit

Governor of the Central Bank of Libya (CBL) al-Sidiq al-Kabeer discussed the international audit of the bank with Stephanie Williams, deputy special representative of the U.N. Secretary General for political affairs in Libya, on Tuesday.

The economic adviser of the U.N. mission attended the meeting, which tackled the bank’s two branches in Tripoli and al-Bayda cities.

The meeting also addressed the bank’s review of the National Oil Corporation’s reported revenues.

Kabeer reviewed the measures taken by the Tripoli-based CBL recently, including monitoring some commercial banks, supporting water and sanitation projects, and implementing the economic reforms announced by the U.N.-recognized Government of National Accord last September.

Last week, there was a rumor that the CBL would move from Tripoli to Misurata in case the city was seized by the Libyan National Army that has been waging a military campaign since early April to take over the capital from the GNA. The CBL denied the reports.

Libya has been suffering escalating violence and political instability ever since the fall of late ruler Muammar Qaddafi in 2011.
