Italy accuses LNA of bombing detention centre in Tripoli

Italian Minister of Interior Matteo Salvini accused the Libyan National Army (LNA) on Wednesday of conducting airstrikes on a detention centre in the Tajoura neighborhood of Tripoli.

Salvini, also the deputy prime minister, said the attack is a “criminal act,” and head of the LNA Khalifa Haftar shoulders its responsibility.

Meanwhile, he called on France to stop supporting “a person who bombs civilian facilities” to preserve his economic and commercial interests in Libya.

Some members of the international community, such as the United States, back Haftar in his military process in the western region to expel armed groups and terrorists from Libya.

Hence, Salvini urged the international community to back the U.N.-recognised Government of National Accord (GNA).

On early Wednesday, an airstrike hit the detention centre housing more than 610 people in Tajoura, killing at least 40 and injuring more than 80.

In a Wednesday statement, the GNA blamed the LNA for the bombing.

Dozens of detention centres in Libya have been overcrowded with thousands of illegal migrants coming from Sudan, Eriteria, Nigeria and Somalia who were trying to cross the Mediterranean to European countries for a better life.

In these centres, they face human trafficking, torture and lack of basic needs.
