Interim Government allocates LYD 50 million for health, education sectors

Libya’s Tobruk-based government has allocated over LYD 50 million for the health and education sectors.

The government allocated LYD 6 million to be divided equally between the two central treatment committees at the Tobruk Medical Center and the Benghazi Medical Center, should these funds be deducted of the budget allocated for the health sector, according to a Thursday statement.

Moreover, al-Qarawi Hospital is set to receive about LYD 4 million in the framework of financial support for the health sector and the fund will be disbursed through the Ministry of Health to provide equipment for operating rooms, laboratories and sterilization devices.

Medical supply in Libya has suffered a major setback due to the persistent political crisis, leading to endemic shortages. Achieving universal health coverage requires access to safe, effective, quality, and affordable essential medicines.

The government also allocated LYD 40 million to the Technology and Maintenance of Educational Facilities Authority to provide the basic needs of educational institutions that have suffered over the past years and were used as shelter centers for displaced people in Benghazi following the 2014 civil war.
