Libyan state ‘responsible’ for electricity cut-off: General Company for Electricity

All foreign companies that were supervising the maintenance of some generation units at the power stations of Ruwais, Zawiya, and al-Khoms have left due to the outbreak of clashes in southern Tripoli.

The General Company for Electricity said Thursday on its Facebook page that the company was unable to complete the new projects in Ubari, the Gulf and west of Tripoli, adding that the failure to complete the projects comes after rising temperatures, increasing humidity and excessive consumption of electrical energy, which led to the recording of a large deficit on Friday at 1,800 megawatts.

The statement said the conditions that the company is going through are “greater than its capabilities,” and that the responsibility lies on the Libyan state, not the General Electricity Company.

Meanwhile, Suq Aljumah Municipality accused the General Company for Electricity of cutting the light off deliberately, despite earlier complaints sent to the company’s board of directors about “injustice” in power cuts in the region.

It also demanded the resignation of the entire board of directors of the company and an investigation into public funds it spent during the past years, allegedly without producing any tangible improvement.

On Thursday night, the streets of Tripoli and southern cities witnessed protests of angry citizens because of the long power cuts that lasted 18 hours. Social media platforms were also full of anger, where Libyan users accused officials at the Government of National Accord (GNA) because of the failure to solve the electricity crisis for years.

Photos and video clips were posted on social media sites during the night for what were said to be night demonstrations and roadblocks on burning tires to protest electricity shortages. The date and place of these photographs and clips could not be verified.
