HoR delegation expected to visit Washington

A delegation of the House of Representatives (HoR) is expected to visit Washington to hold consultations with the White House and deliver a message from General Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA) Khalifa Haftar to U.S. President Donald Trump.

An MP told Asharq Al Awsat newspaper that the upcoming visit to Washington is scheduled to be held by the end of this week; however, no further details were announced.

The United States will support Haftar if he succeeds in unifying Libyan institutions, Col. David B. Des Roches, associate professor at the Near East South Asia Center for Security Studies, said on June 6.

Des Roches added that the U.S., however, backs the Government of the National Accord (GNA) at this time.

Both the GNA and the Interim Government have not controlled the situation and the crisis in Libya so far, he noted.

During a meeting between Trump and Haftar on April 15, Trump praised the veteran commander’s “significant role in fighting terrorism and securing Libya’s oil resources.”
