FDCC head shot, abducted by unidentified militants in Tripoli

Head of Food and Drug Control Center (FDCC) in Tripoli, Mohamed Hassan, was shot and abducted by unidentified militants on Wednesday.

FDDC condemned the incident and called on the Government of National Accord (GNA) to shoulder their responsibilities for saving the center’s head and punishing the perpetrators.

FDCC staff also called on human rights organizations and the United Nations Support Mission in Libya to intervene immediately to release him.

The center’s staff in a Facebook statement praised the FDCC head’s efforts since taking over his position to protect citizens through strict and continuous control of food and medicine in the local market.

The capital Tripoli has been witnessing security unrest since the Libyan National Army (LNA), led by Khalifa Haftar, launched a military campaign in April to take over the city from the U.N.-backed Government of National Accord.

The LNA is allied with the eastern-based government, as the country is politically divided between eastern and western governments.

Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid insecurity and chaos ever since the fall of former leader Muammar Qaddafi in 2011.
