International Community calls for truce in Libya

In a statement before the U.N. Security Council, Karen Pierce, Britain’s ambassador to the United Nations, called Monday on all countries not to violate the U.N. arms embargo on Libya as it will witness a “vital stage” in the upcoming weeks.

On Monday, the international community called for holding a truce in Libya and resuming the political process.

Some countries have violated in the recent period the arms embargo in Libya, such as Turkey and Qatar, who have allegedly sent several weapon shipments and fund to the armed groups in Libya to back the Government of National Accord (GNA). Turkey admitted to sending the arms to balance the fight.

Meanwhile, the U.S. delegate to the Security Council said the fighting in Libya gives a chance to terrorists to re-establish their organizations.

The French delegate also announced support to the Libyan National Forum to end the Libyan crisis through holding presidential and parliamentary elections.

The international community’s call for a truce came during the escalation that Libya’s western region witnesses as the Libyan National Army (LNA) is making progress toward the capital.

On Wednesday, the General Commander of the LNA Khalifa Haftar said the LNA and Libyan people are about to “raise the banner of victory in Tripoli, and the Libyan capital will restore its position as the city of peace without blackmail or threat.”
