GNA closes three migrant detention centers

The government of National Accord (GNA)’ Interior Ministry decided  On Thursday, to close three  migrant detention centers.

The decision, which was published by the ministry’s Facebook account includes, Misurata Center, Tajoura Center, and al Koms Center.

International voices including the United Nations were calling for the closure of these detention centers.

On July 2, two air strikes hit the Tajoura detention centre on the eastern outskirts of Tripoli. Credible reports indicated that six children were amongst those killed, with the U.N. accusing GNA guards of shooting at the migrants after the attack.

The crisis of Tajoura detention center, where more than 40 migrants were killed, could have been avoided by the closure of migrant centers, Ambassador and Regional Director for the Near and Middle East and North Africa German Foreign Office, Christian Buck, said in a tweet.

Buck said the failure of the Government of National Accord (GNA) in dealing with the issue of protecting migrants, which has long been criticized for it.

Agreeing with Secretary-General of the United Nations António Guterres and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, Buck expressed his anger at a tragedy that could have been prevented either by stopping the war or by closing the detention centers, preferring to apply both options.

“The ongoing supply of weapons and munitions to Libya is extending the conflict and preventing efforts by SRSG Salame for a political solution,” he stated in the tweet.
